Truro City meet Margate on Saturday in the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round

Truro City thought they’d got the longest trip of the season (a 670 mile round trip) out of the way on day one. Well, in the words of baseball legend, Yogi Berra, “It’s déjà vu all over again!” as City make the great trek east on Saturday to face Margate in the FA Cup Third Qualifying Round.

As a reminder, the teams met in the National League South’s opening match two months ago in front of a crowd of 752 at Hartsdown Park. After a goal-less first half, Margate went ahead early in the second before Aaron Dawson put Truro level 15 minutes later. CIty were denied a winner 11 minutes from time when Margate ‘keeper Nikki Bull saved an Ed Palmer penalty and both sides then hit the woodwork before the match ended all square.

Margate would go another eight games before recording their first win of the season on September 15th, and now lie 18th in the National League South, five places and six points behind Truro City.

Margate’s defence has been relatively robust, the problem has been at the other end with just 10 goals scored in 12 games (the third lowest strike rate in the League). Remarkably, Margate have not scored at home since that season opener against Truro and have yet to win at Hartsdown Park. And hopes of breaking their home ‘duck’ against bottom side Weston-super-Mare evaporated last Saturday with a 2-0 defeat

Poor recent form in the league means that Margate manger Terry Brown is anxious for a good cup run. 63 year old Brown has 22 years (1,100 matches) of management experience behind him, most significantly five years at AFC Wimbledon who he took into the Football League for the first time in their history. Now, two years into his tenure at Margate, this hugely experienced figure is not taking Truro City’s return visit lightly, saying today:

"Truro are a big, strong, decent side who are on a seven-match unbeaten run. We have got to make sure they don't make it eight.”

The main personnel change at Margate since the start of the season has been the return on a short term deal of former captain Charlie Allen, who left the club last summer. The midfielder scored 13 goals for the cub last season, despite being out for two months with a knee injury. Margate will be hoping that Allen can provide some much-needed punch up front.

Turning to the FA Cup, the high point of Margate’s history in the competition was reaching the Third Round proper in 1972-73 when more than 14,000 crammed into Hartsdown Park for the visit of Tottenham Hotspur.

Last year, Margate went out in the Second Qualifying Round to Barton Rovers, then playing a league lower. This season, to reach the Third Round qualifiers Margate dispatched Potters Bar Town (two levels below Margate in the Evo Stick Southern League) 5-1, with two of their goals coming in injury time at the end of the match.

It’s worth noting that two current Margate players have experienced the rarified atmosphere of a Fifth round FA Cup tie. Defenders David Hunt and Glenn Wilson were in the Crawley Town side that went down 1-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2011 in front of 75,000 spectators. Although Wilson was an unused sub, Hunt played the full 90 minutes and left the field wearing Wayne Rooney’s shirt.

As for Truro, there have also been some changes since the first meetings of the clubs this season. Three players who featured in that clash – Rob Farkins, Ed Palmer and Shane Krac – have left the club. Isaac Vassell, meanwhile will not play as he starts a two match ban following his red card in the Taunton Town cup match. And new arrival, Jamie Reid, who scored in the first 10 minutes of his City debut last Saturday will not be playing as loan club Exeter City do not want him to be cup-tied.

Club Trivia

Pop group Bad Manners (responsible for such seminal works as Lip Up Fatty and Special Brew) were Margate’s shirt sponsor in the 1990s. Lead singer Buster Bloodvessel even joined the board of directors. There is, sadly, no record of Mr. Bloodvessel’s contribution to the strategic development of the club.
