TRURO 0 YEOVIL TOWN 2

BY GARETH DAVIES AT MEADOW PARK

Truro City’s second game in 24-hours ended in defeat as Yeovil Town clinched a return back to the National League.

Goals in either half from Rhys Murphy and Alex Fisher saw the Glovers back in Step One for 2024-25, at the first attempt.

But City were absolutely magnificent to a man, with boss Paul Wotton changing his entire starting line-up, with only James Hamon remaining from the side that drew 0-0 with Eastbourne the day before.

James Melhado, Sam Sanders and Ryan Law partnered in a three-man defensive unit.
There was a first start of the season after injury for Billy Palfrey, who was joined in midfield by Matt Buse, Ryan Kavanagh, Ryan Brett and Keon Sanniola – a loan signing from League Two outfit Forest Green Rovers.

Up front, Josh Hinds led the line with Dom Johnson-Fisher and there was also a notable name on the bench too, in the shape of club record scorer Stewart Yetton, who would enjoy a 10-minute cameo as time ticked down.

Yeovil, who needed just a point after defeat to Worthing in their previous game, started off in positive fashion, but were dealt a blow after just nine minutes when Jordan Stevens broke down and was replaced by Jordan Young.

But the Glovers recovered from that set back in double quick fashion as shortly after, Murphy glanced home a cross to put the visitors in front.

However, Murphy was the next man in a green and white shirt to be forced off injured, with Alex Fisher his replacement and after just 16 minutes, Yeovil had used two out of their three changes.

Yeovil nearly doubled their advantage on the 20-minute mark when Charlie Cooper crossed for Fisher to head goalward. It was similar to Murphy’s opener, but Hamon pulled off an unbelievable save to keep the score at 1-0.

Despite all the changes, City more than matched Yeovil for long periods with Johnson-Fisher looking threatening without visiting custodian Joe Day being seriously called into action.
Day held a long-range effort from Kavanagh right on the half-time whistle, but at 1-0, the game was still evenly poised.

However, Yeovil seemingly wrapped up the points in the second stanza when Michael Smith crossed for Fisher to beat Hamon with another headed effort.

Chances were then at a premium for the remainder of the game as Cooper fired a free-kick over as time ticked down.

And at the final whistle, joyous scenes erupted at Meadow Park with Yeovil’s fans taking part in a customary promotion pitch invasion.

They will be presented with the league champions trophy after Saturday’s home clash with Dartford, while City entertain Maidstone knowing one more victory should all but guarantee Step Two football next term.
