CITY FACE CAPITAL CLASH AGAINST BEAVERS

BY GARETH DAVIES

Truro City are on the road today in Vanarama National League South with a trip to Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Owing to recent postponements, this is Truro’s first away game since January 6, when the side travelled to Dover Athletic and came away from Kent with a 2-0 victory. Andrew Neal and Ed Palmer were on target for City, who made it three wins from four attempts away from home.

Prior to the Dover clash, Truro had picked up three points on the road at Torquay United, Weston-super-Mare and Chelmsford City. The only blot on the away form copybook for Paul Wotton’s side came against Maidstone United, as City suffered a 2-1 reverse at the Gallagher Stadium.

Last time out, Truro were defeated 2-1 at Bolitho Park by mid-table Braintree Town. On a difficult playing surface, the deadlock remained unbroken during the first half with City’s best moments coming through half chances for Neal, Sam Sanders and Will Dean. At the other end, striker Alfie Pavey’s effort was the closest Braintree came.

In the second stanza, the Iron took the lead in fortunate circumstances when Tom Harrison’s brilliant cover tackle saw the ball ricochet off substitute Jay Davis’ leg and into the net. Shortly after taking the lead, Braintree doubled their advantage when Pavey headed home a second goal for the Essex outfit.

Neal gave City hope with a smart low finish in the box nine minutes from time but Braintree held on to condemn Truro to a second successive defeat on English soil.

SQUAD SELECTION

It’s been a busy week in the transfer market for City with two loan additions coming through the door.

Striker Ollie Bray has joined the club on a one-month loan deal from National League side Aldershot Town. Bray moved to the Recreation Ground from Southern League side Willand Rovers last summer. He scored the Shots’ consolation goal in their 4-1 FA Cup third round defeat at West Bromwich Albion last month.

Welsh midfielder Ryan Kavanagh has also made a loan switch to Truro with the 20-year-old joining until the end of the season from Championship side Cardiff City. He first joined the Bluebirds’ academy aged just seven and after suffering a serious knee injury, made a successful return to Cardiff’s under-21 side before the festive period.

Ben Adelsbury is still troubled by a groin problem while Billy Palfrey has started jogging again as his road to recovery from long-term injury continues. Adam Porter could only make the bench against Braintree owing to a thigh problem, but he is now fully fit once more.

IN OPPOSITION

Hampton & Richmond host City currently occupying one of National League South’s play-off places.

However, Mel Gwinett’s side have lost three league games on the spin but progressed in the FA Trophy in recent weeks.

The Beavers started 2024 in positive fashion with a 2-1 win over Slough Town but since that win, apart from the Trophy win, it has been a struggle for the side.

They suffered a 3-1 away reverse at Braintree Town before the side knocked Hartlepool United out of the FA Trophy via a penalty shoot-out.

Similarly to Truro, a spate of postponements meant the Beavers didn’t play from January 13 until last Saturday. But the break didn’t have the desired effect on Gwinett’s charges as they lost 1-0 at home to fellow promotion chasers Chelmsford City seven days ago.

And then in mid-week, relegation threatened Welling United started life post Danny Bloor with a 2-1 home win over the Beavers, just 48-hours after appointing Rod Stringer as their new manager.

LAST TIME WE MET

The Beavers made the trip to Bolitho Park in August last year and secured a 2-1 victory.

Jordan Cheadle opened the scoring for the visitors after 22 minutes, but on the stroke of half-time, Andrew Neal was bundled over in the box and after the merry whistle blower pointed to the spot, City’s pint-sized hit man dusted himself down to coolly dispatch.

After the turnaround, Hampton & Richmond took the lead again seven minutes into the second period when City custodian Jamie Pardington saved well, but the ball fell to Connor Kurran-Browne who made no mistake.

City couldn’t force a late leveller, despite having presentable chances, and three points headed back to the Beveree Stadium.
