The dressing–room post match atmosphere might have felt like a defeat because you could say this was two points dropped, but with a draw at home against a side looking to be in the play-offs, the New Year is looking promising.
Football is very often a game of “what-ifs” and this could certainly be said of yesterday’s match against Stourbridge. Despite Watto giving us the lead in the 35th minute with a clinical finish from a ball put through from skipper Joe Broad, if the striker had made more of two second half chances, the three points would have been home and dry.
Those two chances both came in the ten minutes after the interval, the first was hit wide with the No. 9’s left foot, while for the second he took slightly too long when passing the last defender, delaying his shot and being caught by the visitors’ left back Netan Sansara.
Stourbridge, down to ten men after forward Luke Benbow was red carded for a reckless challenge on Dan Green in the 39th minute, took the initiative at half-time when they brought on striker Ryan Rowe for central defender Nathan Bennett and it paid off handsomely for the Glassboys.
Rowe notched his 13th Calor League goal of the season in the 63rd minute which very much got the visitors back in the game, evidenced by Grant Fisher having to make a match-saving stop from Ben Billingham in the last quarter.
However the game was further proof that we are getting things right – at times we dominated and manager Steve Massey, although disappointed afterwards was able to admit : ”It says how far we’ve come as a team that we can look back and think we were the better side and should have picked up the three points today.”
