City cruise to victory over Bashley

Truro made sure that the league’s bottom side Bashley wasn’t going to spring any surprises at Treyew Road this afternoon.

A lot of work had taken place this morning on the pitch surface to ensure the game got the go ahead from match referee Marc Whalley and that effort was rewarded with a convincing win in which striker Ben Watson found his goalscoring touch again.

It might have taken a while for City to break through the Bashley rearguard but with Watson showing his poacher instinct by hooking in a head down by Arran Pugh in the 42nd minute, and then five minutes later Olly Brokenshire making it two, it was surely game over by half-time
Brokenshire’s second league goal of the season was fired home from out wide on the left after chaos in the visitors’ defence left ‘keeper Monty George off his line.

City went in at the break two goals up, but it could have been so different if Truro’s No 1 Grant Fisher hadn’t had made what proved to be a telling save on the half hour. With the ‘keeper racing back across his goal, somehow he got a foot to Scott Joyce’s goalbound effort to prevent it finding the back of City’s net and keep the game level.

The second half was for most of it dominated by the home side and confirmed with three further goals. In the 64th minute two of our ex-pros combined with Jamie Lowry putting Watson in to finish with class to make it 3-0. Our fourth was just as impressive a finish when Les Afful rolled a free-kick five yards to Cody Cooke who rifled the ball home from 25 yards into the top right hand corner of Bashley’s ‘keeper George’s net.

2013 ended on a real high for Steve Massey’ men as Steve Tully hammered home a 90th minute penalty after substitute Jared Sims had been upended by George.
