CITY WIN ON THE OPENING DAY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SIX SEASONS

Saturday 5th August 2017
National League South
TRURO CITY 3 WELLING UNITED 2

An injury time goal from RIVER ALLEN enabled City to get their new season off to a winning start. After going in at the break two goals to the good, it looked as if it was going to be a case of de-ja-vu as the visitors hit two goals in the space of eight minutes to draw level but in injury time up popped Allen to snatch a vital victory.

Manager Lee Hodges gave debuts to three new players with Billy Palfrey, Aaron Lamont and Ben Harding named in the starting eleven against a much changed Welling United side. This was the how the sides lined up

CITY McHale, Palfrey, Hartridge, Todd, Gerring, Richards, Lamont, Allen, Thompson, Cooke, Harding SUBS Booth, Yetton, Copp, Neal, Riley-Lowe

UNITED: Lewington, Dymonds, Jefford, Parkinson, Coyle, Gayle, Nanetti, Healy, Bradbrook, Goldberg, Ajala SUBS Joseph-Dubois, Durojaiye, Patterson, Francis, Pavey

A good sized crowd were in attendance and they saw the home side make just the start to the game they were looking for when they took an eleventh minute lead. Debutant AARON LAMONT made a strong run and his deflected shot gave the home side a perfect start. The visitors hit back but Tom McHale did well to keep out an effort from Nanetti and on the stroke of half time the Treyew Road faithful went into raptures when the home side doubled their lead through a fine effort from CODY COOKE to send the White Tigers in at the break in a good frame of mind.

HALF TIME TRURO CITY 2 WELLING UNITED 2

Eight minutes into the second half though the visitors were back on level terms. On fifty one minutes player-manager JAMIE COYLE headed home and eight minutes later he repeated his feat to bring the Wings back on level terms.
Halfway through the second half the home side made a triple substitution as they looked to grab a winner and on came Stewart Yetton, Jordan Copp and Rocky Neal to replace Lamont, Niall Thompson and Cooke. With the game entering time added in it was the home side who struck when RIVER ALLEN saw his coss-cum shot end up in the back of the net to get City`s season up and running. The vast majority of the 506 crowd went crazy and seconds late they were able to celebrate a much needed victory.

It was also City`s first victory over Welling in seven attempts and puts them in good heart for Monday`s trip to Evesham United to take on Gloucester City, kick-off 7.45
