MATCH REPORT - Margate 2 Truro City 1 - 01/04/2017
THE WHITE Tigers slipped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Margate.
It was Truro City who came out of the blocks the quickest as we posed a number of early questions of the hosts’ rear-guard and had the ball in the net on nine minutes only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
However, shortly afterwards Margate had their noses in front somewhat against the run of play when Akindayini found the net.
We failed to let our heads drop and went close on 20 minutes with a header that crept just wide of the target before Cody Cooke was unlucky with a strike from distance.
Just past the half-hour mark and Ben Adelsbury tried his luck with a powerful effort that was well saved by the home ‘keeper.
As a niggle started to creep into the game, Tyler Harvey saw yellow but there was joy for The White Tigers as half-time approached when that man Rocky Neal notched the equaliser.
Going into the second half back on level terms, it didn’t take long after the restart for us to fall behind again when Akindayini grabbed his second goal of the game to beat Tom McHale.
It proved to be a big blow for The White Tigers, particularly as we had worked so hard to level matters.
As the clock ticked down, it was Margate’s turn to have a goal ruled out as the closing stages become edgy.
Try as we might, we just couldn’t find an equalising goal. A free-kick right at the death went close before stoppage time saw a teasing ball launched into the area where Ben Gerring met the ball with a towering header at the far post that landed inches over.
There was still time for a flick-on to reach Niall Thompson with virtually the last touch but his downward header was well saved as Margate held on to claim a vital three points in their quest to escape the relegation zone.
TRURO CITY: McHale, Bentley (Smith 82), Hartridge, Richards, Gerring, Adelsbury, Cooke, Allen (Brett 75), Neal, Harvey, Yetton (Thompson 62). Subs not used: Knowles, Todd.
