Truro City's next opponents have an American tycoon President and a squad with a distinctly Spanish flavour (by Colin Bradbury)
Oxford City come to Treyew Road on Bank Holiday Monday with three wins, two draws and just one defeat so far this season. Those 11 points see them sitting 6th in the National League South table.
City are in their fourth season playing in the second tier of non-league football, although, having transferred from the Conference North at the end of last season, this is their first in the southern league. They finished strongly last year in 6th place, just one point outside the Conference North play-offs.
So far in 2015-16, they have beaten Maidstone, St Albans and most recently, Weston-super Mare who went down to City 3-0 on Saturday.
The club, which has always lived somewhat in the shadow of its neighbour, Oxford United, has had an interesting recent history,
In 2013, City named American businessman Thomas Guerriero as Club President. The 38 year old from Florida, who also owns a professional basketball team, was described breathlessly by FC Business magazine as "one of the most powerful and influential CEO’s in the history of Wall Street". What JP Morgan or John D. Rockefeller would have made of that claim is open to question.
However, it's clear that the club does not lack ambition and they have not hesitated to shop for talent overseas. Somewhat unusually at this level of football, the squad boasts no fewer than six Spanish players, three of them signed in the close-season. Altogether, City added 11 players to their squad over the summer.
Top scorer so far this season is Bradley Bubb with four goals. He made the national press with a goal in the season opener. His shot direct from the kick off sailed over the head of the out-of-position Chelmsford goalkeeper. Martin Rice, take note.
