WELLING UNITED 3 TRURO CITY 2

Vanarama National League South

Gareth Davies, Park View Road, Tuesday, February 27

Anthony Papadopoulous’ strike 14 minutes from time saw Truro City leave the capital empty handed, despite a totally dominant opening 45 minutes.

The visitors led 1-0 at the break thanks to Dan Sullivan’s first goal of the season, with Paul Wotton’s men also having a number of other presentable chances.

Welling came out after the break a totally different side and goals from Gene Kennedy and Sonny Fish saw the Wings complete what appeared to be an unlikely turnaround, given City’s first half dominance.

Tyler Harvey drew City level again before Papadopoulos struck in the second half to haul Welling out of the drop zone.

Truro made four changes from the side that faced Bath City seven days ago. Captain Connor-Riley-Lowe and Ben Adelsbury were replaced at the back by Sam Sanders and James Melhado.

In the middle of the park, the two Dan’s – Sullivan and Rooney – who both started on the bench against the Romans, were elevated to the starting line-up. Adam Porter, who bagged a brace when Truro faced the Wings on the opening day, was named as a substitute while Ryan Brett missed out altogether.

In Riley-Lowe’s absence, City would be skipped by Tyler Harvey.

And the former Plymouth Argyle hit-man had a chance to opening the scoring within the first 60 seconds. Home custodian Reice Charles Cook was disposed by Harvey and the City striker’s goal bound effort was cleared off the line by Joe Ellul.

The next 20 minutes of the opening stanza saw City dominate the ball but they couldn’t carve out a clear-cut chance. The next sight of Welling’s goal came from another defensive error and with Andrew Neal in on goal, he was denied by a last-ditch tackle.

Welling were creaking at this point and Sullivan found himself bearing down on goal, only to be denied by Charles-Cook’s legs before the deadlock was finally broken just shy of the half hour mark.

Again, Sullivan found himself in the clear and this time he made no mistake to fire low into the net past Charles-Cook. The City lead was almost doubled just three minutes later when Neal seized on a loose ball in the box with Charles-Cook coming to Welling’s rescue.

The home side who have pushed themselves towards safety with an impressive recent six-game unbeaten run under new boss Rod Stringer, finally had an effort on James Hamon’s goal as the interval approached.

A dangerous free-kick was headed behind by City and from the resulting corner, Reece Grant headed over.

In first half stoppage time, Sullivan had the ball in the net again but he was denied by the assistant’s flag and shortly after, referee Steven Hughes blew for the end of a dominant 45 minutes for City.

But within the space of five second half minutes, Welling had turned the game on its head. A free-kick into the City box wasn’t cleared and Gene Kennedy prodded the ball home.

Then, with City on the front foot, Welling broke clear and the ball was rolled to Sonny Fish who scored the Wings’ second.

City found a second wind however and Harvey picked up the scraps on the edge of the box. He fired towards goal and the ball found its way past Charles-Cook.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw until Papadopoulos lashed the ball home, via the post, from outside the box.
