Truro City face FA Cup replay after letting go 2-0 lead at Taunton Town

Taunton Town 2 Truro City 2

The two teams will have to do it all again at Treyew Road on Tuesday evening after a pulsating second qualifying round tie ended all square.

City had looked to be cruising into the next round after easing into 2-0 lead after only 17 minutes at Wordsworth Drive, with goals from Craig Duff and Matt Wright.

But the home side stormed back to level the scores midway through the second half with two goals from Jordan Rogers and in the end City were glad to have a second chance.

And to make masters worse, they had substitute Isaac Vassell red carded in stoppage time for a second yellow card. It was his second dismissal of the season.

The City side showed two changes, with Ryan Brett in for the injured Cody Cooke and Pierce Mitchell replacing Shane White at right back.

City got off to the perfect start in the ninth minute, when out of nothing, Craig Duff lashed home a tremendous shot from 25 yards over Taunton keeper Lloyd Irish.

If Irish had no chance with that shot, then he was very much to blame for City's second eight minutes later.

His attempted clearance fell straight to an unmarked Craig Duff in a central position and he immediately found Matt Wright who lashed home a first time volley to make it 2-0.

In between, Brett had also hit the post as City threatened to put the game beyond the home side's reach.

But Taunton gradually grew into the game and Jordan Rogers pulled a goal back in the 23rd minute with a neat finish after being out clear on the left, though City claimed Arran Pugh had been fouled in the build up.

For the rest of the half, it was Taunton who carried the greater threat with Jamie Price and Nuno Felix both missing presentable openings to equalise.

And Taunton, who play two levels below City, began the second half strongly forcing a string of corners.

And eventually the pressure paid off as Rogers met a corner from Dale Evans at the far post with Martin Rice, who had just made two great saves to deny Rogers and then Craig Veal, unable to keep the ball out.

It was anyone's game and Vassell had a great chance to win it ten minutes from time when he was put clear but blazed over the bar with only Irish to beat.

His day then got worse as he was first booked for a foul on keeper Irish and then minutes later adjudged to have blocked his free kick earning a rather undeserved second yellow.

Taunton also had their chances but City held firm in nine minutes of stoppage time to go into Monday's draw.

And City boss Steve Tully frankly admitted his team had been second best in the day.

He said : "It was not good enough. It's down to Tuesday now to put it right. We are lucky to be still in the cup. That's way below what we should be at. They were the better team and unlucky not to win it."
