Truro City lose to last gasp goal against Yeovil Town (by Rhod Mitchell, West Briton)

Truro City 0 Yeovil Town 1

City suffered their first friendly defeat of the season as they went down to a last gasp goal against the League 2 visitors on Friday evening.

Marc Laird slotted home from close range, with just two minutes remaining, to give Yeovil, who were playing their first friendly of the season, the victory.

It was a shade tough on the home side, who had won their opening two friendlies at Witheridgeand Tavistock, as they had more than matched the visitors for large parts of the game without being able to find the finishing touch.

But City boss Steve Tully will take plenty of positives from the match as he prepares his promoted side for the start of the season on Saturday August 8 when they travel to play Margate in National League South.

He gave all 19 players a run out including trialists Bafdi Gass, Will Summerfield, Will Halstead and Adam Morgan, a run out, though it is understood none will be offered a contract to stay on at Treyew Road.

Tully started with a strong team, playing 3-5-2 and Isaac Vassell shot just wide of the far post early on with Shaun Jeffers going close for Yeovil.

Shane White did have the ball in the net right on half time, but his header was ruled out for offside.

Both managers rang the changes after the break with Yeovil boss Paul Sturrock fielding a completely new line up.

City continued to perform well with Shane Krac twice denied by Chris Weale, while sub Les Afful took too long to get his shot away when well placed.

For Yeovil, Jakub Sokplik hit the bar from wide out and Tom McHale, who had come on in goal for new signing Martin Rice did well to keep out a Jamie Burrows header.

But the game looked to be heading for a 0-0 draw until Laird struck to give Yeovil the win.

City are next in action at Falmouth Town on Tuesday evening, while Yeovil complete their mini-Cornwall tour at Callington Town on Sunday (1pm).
