Devlin's double secures semi-final berth for Dolphins (by Bournemouth Echo)

STEVE Devlin's first-half brace ensured Poole Town's safe passage to the Red Insure Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 victory over Truro City.

A youthful Dolphins line-up controlled the low-key tie and deserved their 31st-minute lead when Devlin's stinging long-range drive was scooped into the net by visiting keeper Thomas McHale.

Devlin then doubled Poole's money from the penalty spot three minutes before the break following Truro left-back Ryan Brett's trip on Cherries loan striker Joe Quigley.

Poole defender Will Spetch made his long-awaited return from injury from the substitutes' bench at half-time.

There was little in the way of goalmouth action during the second half but City did threaten a fightback following the introduction of lively substitute Isaac Vassell.

Poole youngster Callum Cunniffe-Pilley spurned a one-on-one with 10 minutes to play while City's Matt Wright hit the crossbar with a header late on.

The win increased to £750 Dolphins' prize earnings from the Southern League's knockout competition.

Poole join Corby Town, Egham Town and North Leigh in the last four.

Dolphins: Hutchings (Marques de Salve, 67), Dickson, Martin, Walker (Spetch, h-t), Helyar, Harris, Close, Devlin, Quigley (Cunniffe-Pilley, 57), Roberts, Oldham. Unused subs: Tallack, Brooks.

Poole Town 2 Truro City 0 (by Rhod Mitchell, West Briton)

City's hopes of a first ever Red Insure Cup success ended with this quarter-final defeat in Dorset on Tuesday evening.

Two first half goals by Steve Devlin, including a penalty, were enough to give the home side victory and a place in the last four of what is in effect the Southern League Cup.

But City boss Steve Tully, who made six changes for the game after Saturday's shock 1-0 Evo-Stik Southern premier division defeat at Frome Town, including a debut for teenage Bodmin keeper Tom McHale, was delighted with his side's second half performance.

He said: "They were the better side in the first half, but in the second period we had the best chances and could have easily it taken it to penalties, I was really pleased and it was good to get Saturday's performance out of our system."

The home team looked much the more threatening in the opening 45 minutes and McHale made several good saves, but will be dispappointed to have been beaten just before the half hour mark by Devlin's long range effort.

And McHale was picking the ball out of the net again ten minutes later when Devlin scored from the spot following a foul by Shane Krac, though there looked to have been an offside earlier in the play.

After the break City were much improved but just could not find a goal, with substitute Matt Wright heading against the bar the closest they came to a goal as the league leaders, who City meet next in the league at Treyew on Saturday week, moved into the last four.

City: McHale; Parker, Brett, Ash, Palmer, White, Green (Greenslade 56), Krac, Hayles (Vassell 65), Afful (Wright 65), Sullivan. Sub (not used): Farkins.

Yellow cards: Brett, Greenslade, Sullivan.

Goals; Devlin (29) 1-0, Devlin (39 pen) (2-0)

Crowd: 152.
