It might have been late in the game, but what a goal from Liam Eddy.

On as a substitute, the striker let go from fully 35 yards, finding the roof of the Street net and settling the tie in the 89th minute.

Up until then, despite City having the majority of possession, Street had defended well enough to surely think they were going to be arranging a replay for Tuesday evening.

Skipper Jake Ash was missing again injured, while Les Afful was left on the sub’s bench to give his hamstrings a rest. Paul Quinn cup-tied, having already appeared in the competition with Tavistock, and a suspended Dan Evans meant that the classy looking Jamie Lowry came straight in for his debut, George Swain slotted in and looked comfortable at left-back with Seb Broomfield starting a game for only the second time.

The first 45 minutes was a fairly tame affair with the best chances of the half coming in the last five minutes with City ‘keeper Ollie Chenoweth forced to punch away a Jack Malone shot, while at the other end Matt Andrew was unlucky not to be able to get more behind an effort on goal when the Street defence for once looked in trouble.

Eight minutes into the second-half and the Street goalkeeper, Nathan Whatley, had to be on his toes as a George Swain cross came flying off defender Tom Clifford-Jones’ boot. With no time to think, the ‘keeper somehow got across his six yard box to push the ball away.

Street’s main threat right midfielder Jack Malone, had a shot blocked at the other end, but it was City who continued to look the more likely to score with Broomfield, on a couple of occasions, seeing shots blocked with Street bodies flying in from all angles.

Both sides made substitutions, for Truro Eddy coming on for Neil Slateford and it was this one that, in the end, ensured City’s name will be in the hat for the Second Qualifying Round draw on Monday.

Just when the game seemed to be heading for a goalless draw, Eddy picked up the ball a long way out from the Street goal, ran with it for five yards or so before looking up and unleashing a brilliant shot that ended up flying into the top corner of the Street goal. The breakthrough sent the Truro supporters behind that goal delirious and relieved that the player had at last broken his duck for the season.

It was certainly a goal worthy of winning any game.
