Truro hit five past young Argyle side (by Rhod Mitchell, West Briton)

Truro City 5 Plymouth Argyle 1

City turned in an impressive display in their first home friendly of pre-season, to overcome a mainly youthful Argyle side at Treyew Road.

Goals from Barry Hayles, Dan Green, Craig Duff, Isaac Vassell and Ben Watson made it four wins out of five for City.

The sole Argyle reply came from a cracking free-kick from skipper Tyler Harvey, son of former Truro player Lee Harvey.

Truro boss Steve Tully though said he would not be getting carried away with the result.

He said: "It was another step forward but there were no points at stake. I thought it was our best performance so far in pre-season. We looked strong at the back and scored some good goals, but there are still things to work on."

City began the game well and took the lead after six minutes, when Barry Hayles latched onto a loose ball and calmly slipped his shot past the right hand of Argyle keeper James Bitner.

And the home side doubled their advantage ten minutes before the break when a lightning counter-attack saw Cody Cooke feed skipper Dan Green who finished well from close range.

But Argyle pulled a goal back five minutes later, when captain Harvey hammered an unstoppable free kick past Mike Searle in the City goal.

City though soon restored their two lead at the start of the second half, with a fine header from substitute Craig Duff.

Hayles then quickly set up Vassell for a goal against the team who released him at the end of last season.

Both sides rang the changes on a humid evening, before Watson completed the scoring just before he end, with a superb strike which went in off the underside of the bar.

It was an entertaining encounter and both sides had chances, but City were far from clinical in front of goal.

City are next in action at Plymouth Parkway on Tuesday evening.
