FA Cup fever in the west on Saturday as Truro CIty travel to Taunton

FA Cup fever hits the West Country this weekend as the the oldest football competition in the world reaches the Second Qualifying round. Three rounds have already been played this season (confusing, isn’t it?) and, as a National League South Club, Truro City enters the competition at this level.

Truro’s opponents will be Somerset’s Taunton Town FC – nicknamed the Peacocks - whose home is the 2,500 capacity Viridor Stadium. The teams will be battling it out for a place in the Third Qualifying Round and prize money of £4,500.

This will be the first time that Truro and Taunton have played each other in the FA Cup. The last meeting between the two clubs was a July 2014 pre-season friendly which the White Tigers won 3-0.

The Peacocks play in Evo Stick League – Division One South & West, which is Step Four of the Non-League pyramid, (two below Truro City).

Taunton finished in the promotion places for the Southern League Premier in 2014-15, losing 2-1 to Stratford Town in the Play-off semi-final.

After eight games of the 2015-16 season, Taunton are in fourth position with 16 points. This season started strongly with four straight wins, though form has dipped a little recently with just one victory in the last four games.

As for the FA Cup, Taunton entered two rounds ago, beating teams in leagues one step below them in both matches.

In the Preliminary Round they defeated Odd Down (Western League Premier) 5-1 and went on to beat Tuffley Rovers (Hellenic League Premier) 3-0 in the 1st Round Qualifying. This is the first time in nine years that Taunton have made it as far as the Second Qualifying Round.

In terms of Taunton players to watch, information is a bit thin on the ground, unfortunately.

However, one man to keep an eye on is striker Jordan Rogers, Taunton’s leading scorer this season, with 9 goals in 10 League and FA Cup matches. Rogers joined the club in the summer from Division One South & West League rivals Yate Town where he was top scorer with 24 goals last season.

Also joining last summer was ex-Bristol Rovers and Wales U19, Josh Klein-Davis. The striker, who has also played at Weston-super-Mare and Weymouth, has found the back of the net three times so far this season for Taunton.

So there we have it - the 'FA Cup Journey' (as TV pundits are contractually obliged to call it) starts here. And the victor in Saturday's encounter will be a mere nine wins away from a date with destiny at Wembley in May next year.
