Pitch inspections planned if conditions are marginal

This winter's heavy rainfall has made life difficult for all British football clubs and Truro City is no exception.

The uncertain weather forecast for the next few days means that there is a risk that Saturday's home game against Dartford FC could be postponed.

Dartford have informed Truro City that the team will depart for Cornwall at around 1pm on Friday. On that basis, if playing conditions at Treyew Road look doubtful on Friday morning, the National League will permit Truro City to arrange a pitch inspection before mid-day. Should the surface be declared unplayable at that point, the fixture will be postponed, preventing a wasted journey for the Dartford team.

However, even if the pitch is declared playable at lunchtime on Friday, heavy rain over the 24 hours before the kick off at 3pm on Saturday could still lead to a postponement. The management of Dartford FC understand this and will start their journey on Friday in the knowledge that the match could be called off after they arrive in Cornwall.

The club will keep supporters up to date with developments.

Regarding the postponement of the Bath City match last Tuesday, Truro City would like to reiterate that while it was regrettable, it was also unavoidable and that everything was done according to league regulations.

The ground staff at Treyew Road worked on the pitch all day and at 4.30pm, the surface was playable. However, subsequent torrential rain and two hailstorms meant that the referee had no choice but to call the match off. The Bath City chairman, while understandably disappointed, accepted the decision.

For the sake of clarity, the league requires clubs to make every effort to get matches played and fixtures cannot be called off solely on the basis of a weather forecast. In any case, as the referee himself pointed out, the forecast last Tuesday did not predict the downpours and hailstorms that took place in the late afternoon.
